What to Expect at Your Appointments
Each of our sessions is 50 minutes long, providing a dedicated and confidential space for us to focus entirely on your well-being.
Our Initial Sessions: During our first two meetings, the focus is on gently getting to know your story. I will conduct a comprehensive assessment by asking questions to understand the specific challenges you are currently facing, while also exploring the broader context of your life. This holistic approach ensures I have a deep understanding of your situation. At the conclusion of these sessions, we will collaboratively discuss your therapy goals. If you feel comfortable and ready to move forward, we will then schedule your ongoing appointments.
Subsequent Sessions: These sessions are where our therapeutic work deepens. We will focus on navigating your current concerns and difficulties as they arise, while regularly reviewing the insights you’ve gained and the progress you’ve made. My goal is to support you in creating sustainable change at a pace that feels right for you.
What Language Is Therapy Conducted In?
I am fully bilingual and offer therapy sessions in both English and Mandarin Chinese (中文). You are more than welcome to choose the language you feel most comfortable using, or we can move between the two to best capture your thoughts and feelings during our time together.
Do I Need a Referral to See a Clinical Psychologist?
- Booking Without a Referral: You are more than welcome to book an appointment with me directly without a referral. If you have private health insurance, you may be eligible for a rebate depending on your specific level of cover. I recommend checking with your insurer to see if clinical psychology is included in your policy.
- Medicare Rebates: If you wish to claim a Medicare rebate, you will need a referral from your GP under a GP Mental Health Care Plan*. This plan entitles you to claim a rebate for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. Please bring your referral and care plan with you to our first appointment so I can assist you with the claiming process.
- Third-Party Referrals: If you are being referred by a third party—such as an NDIS provider, an insurance company, or WorkCover—please provide all relevant referral information and claim details when making your initial appointment. This ensures we have the necessary documentation in place before we begin our sessions.
*Tip: When visiting your GP to discuss a Mental Health Care Plan, please request a “double” or “long” appointment to ensure you have enough time to complete the necessary paperwork.
Who Are the Clients I Work With?
I provide clinical support to a diverse range of individuals across the lifespan, including children, adolescents, and adults. My practice is dedicated to helping people from all walks of life navigate their unique psychological journeys in a safe, non-judgmental environment. Whether you are seeking support for yourself, your child, or your family, I offer therapy in both English and Mandarin Chinese (中文) to ensure you feel fully understood.
What Are My Specialised Areas of Practice?
While I work with a broad spectrum of mental health concerns, I have extensive experience and a particular interest in the following specialised areas:
- Trauma and Childhood Issues: Supporting those who have experienced relational trauma, complex trauma, or difficult childhood experiences.
- Emotional Dysregulation and Behavioural Problems: Helping both children and adults develop healthier ways to manage intense emotions and challenging behaviours.
- Mood and Anxiety Disorders: Providing evidence-based treatment for depression, generalised anxiety, social anxiety, and panic disorders.
- Personality Disorders: Offering long-term, supportive therapy (such as Schema Therapy) for individuals navigating complex personality-based challenges.
- Relationship and Interpersonal Issues: Working with clients to improve their connections with others and resolve deep-seated interpersonal difficulties.
How Often Will We Meet?
The frequency of our sessions is tailored to your individual needs and the nature of the challenges you are currently facing. While every journey is different, I find that clients typically experience the most meaningful progress when we meet on a weekly or fortnightly basis, particularly during the initial stages of therapy.
This consistency allows us to build a strong therapeutic relationship and maintain the momentum needed for growth. As you begin to feel more confident and move closer to your goals, we will regularly review your progress together and may decide to space our appointments further apart. My aim is to ensure the pace of therapy feels sustainable and supportive for you.
How Are Sessions Conducted?
I offer the flexibility of both in-person consultations at my West Perth clinic and online sessions via secured telehealth platforms. Whether we meet face-to-face or virtually, my priority is to provide a private and safe environment where you feel comfortable sharing your story.
For our telehealth sessions, I use Zoom or Microsoft Teams, both of which are reliable and industry-standard platforms. Telehealth is an excellent, accessible option for clients located throughout Western Australia or for those who simply find it more convenient to engage in therapy from the comfort of their own home. I will provide you with a secure link before our appointment, ensuring our conversation remains confidential and your data is protected at all times.
Treatment Modalities Used
The therapeutic approach I take will always depend on your specific needs and the goals we set together. I primarily work from a Psychodynamic and Psychoanalytic orientation. This means that, in addition to addressing your current symptoms, we may explore the deeper, underlying patterns and past experiences that shape how you relate to yourself and others today.
To ensure you receive the most effective and individualised care, I also integrate several other evidence-based modalities when required, including:
- Attachment-Based Therapy: Focusing on how early relationships influence your current emotional security.
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Helping you identify and change unhelpful thinking and behaviour patterns.
- Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT): Working directly with your emotions to help you understand and regulate them more effectively.
- Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR): A specialised approach for processing and healing from traumatic or distressing life experiences.
- Schema Therapy: Aimed at addressing long-standing, deeply-rooted emotional patterns (schemas) that may be holding you back.
Additionally, I am a registered Circle of Security Parenting (COS-P) facilitator. I am deeply passionate about advocating for strong, secure parent-child relationships and supporting parents to better understand and respond to their children’s emotional needs.
How Do I Book an Appointment?
To begin your journey, the most comfortable first step is to submit an enquiry through the contact form on this website. Alternatively, you are more than welcome to send an email directly to psychotherapy@jacintatan.com or call the clinic on 045 269 8113.
Please feel free to reach out in either English or Mandarin Chinese (中文). When you get in touch, it is helpful to briefly mention the nature of your enquiry and whether you already have a GP Mental Health Care Plan or a third-party referral in place.
I aim to respond to all messages within one to two business days to discuss your needs and schedule an initial assessment. I look forward to hearing from you and exploring how we can work together.
What Is Your Cancellation and Rescheduling Policy?
I understand that life can sometimes be unpredictable, and plans may need to change. However, as a small practice, I kindly ask for at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment.
When you book a session, that time is reserved exclusively for you. Providing sufficient notice allows me the opportunity to offer that session time to another client who may be on a waiting list or in need of urgent support.
- Cancellations with more than 48 hours’ notice: No fee will be charged.
- Cancellations with less than 48 hours’ notice: A cancellation fee of 50% of the session fee will apply.
- Cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice (or non-attendance): The full session fee will be charged.
Please note that Medicare and private health insurers do not provide rebates for cancellation fees. If an unexpected emergency or illness arises, please contact me as soon as possible so we can discuss your situation. I appreciate your understanding and cooperation in helping me maintain a reliable service for all my clients.
What Should I Bring to My First Appointment?
To make our first meeting as smooth and relaxed as possible, it is helpful to have a few things organised in advance. If you have been referred by your GP under a Mental Health Care Plan, please bring both the plan and the referral letter with you so that I can ensure your Medicare rebates are processed correctly. If you are being supported through the NDIS, an insurance provider, or WorkCover, please have your claim or participant number handy.
For those using Private Health Insurance, please bring your membership card or details. If we are meeting to discuss support for a child or adolescent, bringing along any previous school reports or assessments from other specialists can also be very helpful in providing a comprehensive picture. Most importantly, just bring yourself—my goal is to provide a safe, supportive space where you feel heard from the very beginning.
